Welcome to my genealogy page for the surname Flanagan. It's focus is on Flanagan genealogy in Russell County, Kentucky, but some of it's content will be more general. I hope to be adding to the content as I get my genealogical notes in order and gain new information.

From 1982 to 1984, I was able to engage in quite a bit of research and, while some notes and documents are not readilly available, I hope to share what I know or believe to be the case, based on various records, as well as interviews with family members. While this page will initially focus on my line going back to John Flanagan who seems to have arrived in Kentucky from North Carolina in the late 1700s, I hope to at some point provide detailed information on his descendents as well as his ancestry.

While the focus will be on the Flanagan family, both the Russell County line and the surname generally, there will also be discussion of other Russell County families I am related to, including the following surnames: Bernard, Brown, Coffey, Dunbar, Edmonds, French, George, Kean, Mason, MacGeachy, Williams, Wooldridge.

In addition, it will serve as a "soapbox" for my political and social perspective, decidedly libertarian leftist in nature. And for the record, Bill Clinton was no leftist. Most Democrats today are center right, they're only left-wing when compared to the republicans who are far-right-wing in my opinion. If you don't like it, tough. I pay for this webspace both to provide a genealogical service to others and for a forum to express my views. Probably 80-90% is genealogical, while 10-20% deal with my political/social issues. I've abstracted early marriage records, indexed cemeteries, photographed grave markers, scanned and transcribed documents, which I provide free access to, I've paid for several Flanagan DNA tests out of my own pocket - something that there is too little of in our contemporary greed-laden environment. When folks who give nothing to the genealogical community, who contribute nothing to preserving the history and heritage of our surnames, in particular Flanagan, tell me I should only have genealogy here and stay away from politics, it has the stench of a well-used outhouse. If you don't like my support of a political or social issue, my support for Irish leftist/nationalist causes, or using it to discuss my transgenderism, then you don't have to come here or use the materials I provide here. You are free to visit this site, you are free to access and use the materials I have put here as long as you don't violate copyright laws and acknowledge the source if you share it elsewhere - no matter what your views are, left or right, secular or religious, conservative or liberal. That is what this site is mainly about. But don't try to tell me what it's content should be. If I have to choose between expressing my thoughts, opinions, and views on the one hand and genealogy on the other it will be an easy choice. I'll take every shred of genealogical information here off. I value liberty, dissent, and free-speech far more than acquiescence to an increasingly corrupt system of government. And I fully intend to discuss my transgenderism here - you can approve or disapprove, like me or not like me, I likely would feel the same towards you if that is the case. I might get my feelings hurt, but I won't be silent, I won't acquiesce, I won't give up the struggle and fight - I'm Irish and the Irish never run from a struggle. As to whether you like me or my opinions, in the words of the traditional Irish song "The Moonshiner":

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home
And if you don't like me, well, leave me alone
I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
And the moonshine don't kill me, I'll live til I die

Remember the Hunger Strike of 1981! In 1981 several members of the Irish National Liberation Army and the Irish Republican Army began a hunger strike to defend political prisoner status and bring attention to the Irish struggle. Several of them died. May 5 marks the anniversary of the first death, that of Bobby Sands. At the time I was a student at the University of Cincinnati and woke to that news and a mud-slinging attack on the Irish struggle in the student newspaper. I wrote a response to it that was published in the next issue, titled "A Struggle for Liberation". My views have not changed. Remember them.!
